Jess Stahl is the executive editor for strategic initiatives at Grist, a nonprofit, independent newsroom covering climate, justice, and solutions. In that role, she leads the newsroom’s work in deepening and expanding its impact, reach, and audience loyalty through new editorial initiatives and experiments. She joined Grist in 2021 as editor and eventually co-director of its solutions lab, directing strategy and content for a team focused on innovative storytelling around climate solutions. Prior to Grist, Jess was the director of audio at The Washington Post, where she launched the newspaper’s podcast operation, growing it into an award-winning industry leader in both innovation and audience reach, and was The Post’s deputy editor for audience, overseeing a newsroom group focused on developing targeted audience growth strategies and smart multimedia content. That team won an Edward R. Murrow award for its work during the 2016 presidential election. She is a graduate of Johns Hopkins SAIS and Princeton University, and lives in Washington, D.C.
