Yumi Wilson is a tenured professor in the BECA Department (Broadcast and Electronic Communication Arts) at San Francisco State University, where she teaches courses in media writing, broadcast journalism, and critical studies on popular culture. She is also the host of A Journalist’s Guide to AI, a podcast that helps media professionals navigate the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence in journalism (yumiwilson.me).
With a journalism career that began at the Associated Press and San Francisco Chronicle, Yumi brings decades of experience in both traditional and digital media. She previously worked at LinkedIn as a corporate communications manager, where she trained professionals, including journalists and PR practitioners, on personal branding and digital storytelling.
Yumi is a Fulbright grant recipient and Knight-Wallace journalism fellow. She is currently on the Fulbright Specialist Roster and was recently selected to conduct a two-week workshop in Laos in November 2025 as part of the Enhancing Media Literacy, Cybersecurity, and AI Integration project with the National University of Laos.
Yumi has led workshops on branding, social media, and opinion writing for organizations such as Consumer Reports, newsrooms in China, and the Women’s Media Center. She also offers coaching to individuals navigating career transitions and reinvention, using AI tools, LinkedIn strategy, and storytelling to help clients gain clarity and confidence.
At ONA24, she moderated the panel "What Smaller Orgs Can Teach Everyone About AI and Trust," offering insights on innovation and resilience in journalism.
